Tsing Pao, Kejserens Efterretninger, er højst sandsynlig verdens ældste avis. Den blev trykt med trætavler, hvor teksten var udskåret. Den udkom i Beijing omkring år 1000 før Kristus. Anders Bordings Den Danske Mercurius regnes som den første danske avis. Den udkom 1666-77. Danmarks ældste provinsavis er Fyens Stiftstidende, som blev grundlagt i 1772.
